It is well known that Agriculture is the backbone of the Nation and woman being the major contributor to this form it's sad to see that she is still in tears, she makes a huge contribution but yet go unrecognized due to systemic inequalities that keep them from achieving their full potential. Despite their significant role in producing food and sustaining communities, women face challenges that are both profound and deeply entrenched.
One of the most glaring issues is Limited Land Ownership. Globally, women make up 36% of the workforce in agrifood systems, with figures as high as 66% in sub-Saharan Africa. Yet, they own a mere 10-20% of agricultural land. This disparity robs women of the ability to fully participate in decision-making and invest in their livelihoods, keeping them dependent and marginalized in a sector they dominate.
How could that be fair?
Financial barriers further entrench these inequalities. Women often lack access to the credit, inputs, and resources they need to scale their agricultural activities. Without financial independence, they remain trapped in cycles of poverty, unable to purchase quality seeds, fertilizers, or equipment. These constraints limit their productivity but also deepen their vulnerability in a rapidly changing agricultural landscape.
The impacts of climate change amplify these challenges. Women are disproportionately affected by climate-related risks due to:
They often bear the brunt of environmental degradation and extreme weather events, lacking the tools and resources to recover from these shocks. While their role in agriculture makes them crucial to climate solutions, systemic barriers leave them underprepared and overexposed to its impacts.
Adding to this is women’s exclusion from decision-making processes. Whether at the household, community, or policy level, women are frequently left out of conversations that directly affect their lives and livelihoods. This exclusion disempowers them and hinder the progress of sustainable development, as their perspectives and needs are overlooked in agricultural policies and interventions.
The intensity of these problems cannot be overstated. They represent a profound injustice but also a missed opportunity to explore the potential of women as leaders in agriculture and stewards of the planet.
Addressing these inequalities is a MUST for it’s essential for building resilient food systems, combating climate change, and achieving global food security.
We refuse to let these inequalities persist, and we won’t let women cry last. @HerFarm,Her Story is more than an innitiative; it’s a movement dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty, exclusion, and vulnerability for women in agriculture. Through innovative solutions like affordable credit through MazaoHub Agrifinance, land ownership advocacy, and climate-smart agricultural practices, we are creating opportunities for women to thrive and lead the way in sustainable farming.
But we can’t do it alone. Together, we can make an even greater impact. Join us at MazaoHub to learn about the transformative work we’re doing and explore how we can partner to eliminate the systemic barriers that hold women back.
