The air was thick with anticipation as the Regional Commissioners of Tanzania's seven regions gathered in the city of Musoma, along with members of parliament, political party leaders, and all other key players in the cotton industry. The meeting, held on December 13, 2022, was a crucial moment for the future of cotton production in the country.

In his emotional opening remarks, the Regional Commissioner of the Mara region, Honorable Suleiman Mzee, emphasized the significance of the meeting for the development of the cotton industry. Mzee spoke passionately about the 235 basic cooperatives in the Mara region that are engaged in the collection and sale of cotton, as well as the two national cooperatives that support the industry.

Mzee also highlighted the increasing use of digital technology in agriculture, which has improved the efficiency and accuracy of data for planning and budgeting in the sector. The Commissioner praised the Development Committee of Cooperatives and all other institutions that organized the meeting, calling it a crucial step in ensuring the sustainability of the cotton harvest and providing education to farmers and cooperative leaders on best practices.

Other regional commissioners in attendance were from the regions of Simiyu, Geita, Mwanza, Shinyanga, Tabora, Mara, and Katavi. These leaders agreed that the meeting was essential in discussing and planning ways to improve the production and market of cotton in the country. Other participants included members of parliament, district commissioners, officials from relevant institutions, and the Director General of the Tanzania Cooperative Development Commission, the Director General of the Cotton Board, and the Director General of the Warehouse Receipt Regulatory Board.

What i believe As a Stakeholder of the cotton industry?

As a Stakeholder of the cotton industry, I believe that the commissioners and other stakeholders who gathered at the recent meeting in Musoma should seriously consider using a new farm management software called Mazao Hub.

The software has the potential to revolutionize the way that cotton is produced and marketed in Tanzania, and it could play a crucial role in helping cooperatives, the Cotton Board, the Cooperative Development Commission, and the Warehouse Receipt Regulatory Board to map cotton farmers, manage cotton productivity, and provide real-time data insights for planning and budgeting, Cotton collection and warehouse management. Thanks to 6 Off-takers of Cotton from Shinyanga who are currently using Mazao Hub as cotton collection Management system i.e Gaki Investment.

One of the key benefits of using Mazao Hub is that it allows for traceability from the farm to the market, which can help to improve the overall quality and value of the cotton produced in Tanzania. Additionally, the software is available for free through partnerships with relevant boards, making it an affordable and accessible option for farmers and cooperatives.

I also believe that it is important for the government to support the use of domestically developed technologies to digitize agriculture in Tanzania. Mazao Hub was developed by Tanzanians based at the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology, and it has already proven to be successful in other countries like Zambia. By supporting the use of this technology, the government can help to promote innovation and growth in the agricultural sector, while also supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs.
